Photo Mount Size Guide
When selecting a mount for your photographs or prints, it is important to understand two key measurements: the insert size and the outer mount size.
Mounts are typically named according to the photo size they hold, rather than their external dimensions.
1 Insert Size
The insert refers to the photograph or print that sits behind the mount aperture. The print should be slightly larger than the aperture opening so it remains securely positioned behind the mount.
Example: A mount designed for a 4×6" photograph will usually have an aperture slightly smaller than 4×6".
2 Mount (Outer) Dimensions
The outer dimensions describe the full size of the mount itself. These measurements are important when choosing suitable packaging or frames.
Packaging: Bags or envelopes should always be slightly larger than the mount's outer dimensions.
Framing: The frame opening should be large enough to accommodate the mount comfortably.
